In order to avoid jamming your garbage disposal, nothing more than table scraps should go into it, and always while the cold water is running.  Contrary to popular belief, animal bones don’t sharpen the unit (there is nothing to sharpen, it’s a grinder), they break it.  Grease will clog the drain and this is also true of potato peels, because the starch turns to glue and can become an obstruction.  Stringy vegetables such as asparagus, celery, and lettuce will wrap around the drain and could be the cause of an emergency call to the plumber.  And, believe it or not, rice and pasta fall under the category of banned items – both swell when they come in contact with water and gather in the trap until it is jammed.  So remember, nothing but table scraps – what have you been feeding your garbage disposal???
